If you haven’t yet read the background to the prophesy, please do. It will benefit you throughout our time together.

Habakkuk 1:1-3

“I am Habakkuk the prophet. And this is the message that the LORD gave me. Our LORD, how long must I beg for your help before you listen? How long before you save us from all this violence? Why do you make me watch such terrible injustice? Why do you allow violence, lawlessness, crime, and cruelty to spread everywhere? ”  CEV.

The people of Judah had failed to obey God’s laws. Habakkuk did not understand why God did nothing to make them fall in line. (Habakkuk 1:2-4.) He was confused and frustrated because of God’s seeming failure to take action in the face of all the evil practices and idolatry the Jews were involved in. God, how could you allow this to happen?

  • Is this perhaps the kind of question that is foremost on your mind right now?

Why God?

  • Perhaps someone dear to you is going through troubled waters. I’m writing this during a life-threatening global pandemic. Why God?
  • What possible reason might there be for God not answering your prayers for the situation you’re looking at right now? Why aren’t you hearing us Lord?

Do you feel as if your prayers are bouncing off the ceiling? See what Habbakkuk has to say. Share on X

‘In these modern times, there are an increasing number of people who are searching for the ability to handle the problems of our day with peace of mind. For many life has become extremely complicated…”
(Fountains of blessing – Solly Ozrovech – 24 July.)

Spend a few minutes thinking about (or discussing) the following questions.

Tough Questions

  • Would you agree with Solly Ozrovech’s assessment of the situation? Why? Why not?
  • What world-wide situation is robbing you of peace of mind at present?

‘Tough questions don’t stump God…God never turns away an honest seeker. Go to God with your questions. You may not find all the answers, but in finding God, you know the One who does.’
(Quoted by Max Lucado in ‘Walking with the Savior.’)

  • Is there something you could do, apart from prayer?

Speak to the Lord about your problems now.

Ask Him why? And listen for an answer.

In this short three-chapter prophecy Habakkuk is going to teach us that as we get to know God better, we will be able to cope better with our storms. He will encourage us how to live by faith in a faithless world.

We are not immune to the storms of life. But as Christians, we do have an unshakable God to hold onto through the storms.

  • Can you think of any reasons why God allows you to go through the storms of life?

Paul provides us with one possible reason,”He comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, he brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us.”
(2 Corinthians 1:4 MSG)

  • Is there someone you are aware of who is going through really tough times? Ask the Lord to show you how you can come alongside that person.

Lord, I bring before you ___. You know the situation better than I do. Please come alongside him/her and bring blessing and comfort. Please show me if there is anything I need to do.

Thank You,

Amen.
